Shopify Plus and headless commerce are not opposites. Plus is a commerce platform plan; headless describes a storefront separated from the commerce backend. You can use both together. For an enterprise buying decision, compare three concrete proposals: a Shopify Plus theme storefront, Shopify Plus with a custom headless storefront, and a custom or composable stack using another commerce backend.
The right choice is the least complicated architecture that meets your important requirements and that your team can keep operating. An impressive frontend demonstration is not a complete commerce proposal.
Compare the three architectures
| Decision | Plus with theme | Plus with headless | Custom / composable commerce |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commerce foundation | Shopify | Shopify | Selected commerce engine or custom backend |
| Storefront work | Theme design and extensions | Custom frontend and API integration | Custom frontend plus backend orchestration |
| Content team workflow | Theme editor and app workflows | Must prove preview, page building and publishing | Must specify the CMS and editorial workflow |
| Change ownership | Theme and app maintenance | Frontend releases plus commerce integrations | Responsibility across every contracted component |
| Useful starting point | Requirements fit native selling workflows | Distinctive storefront needs justify engineering | Critical business rules need a different foundation |
This is an architectural comparison, not a promise that one approach will be faster or cheaper in every implementation. A poorly configured theme can be slow; a carefully built headless site can be fast. Either can fail operationally if product information, checkout or fulfilment is unreliable.
What Shopify Plus actually costs
As checked on 12 September 2026, Shopify's published Plus pricing starts at US$2,300 per month on a three-year term or US$2,500 per month on a one-year term. More complex, higher-volume businesses may use a variable platform fee. Payment rates vary by region and arrangement. Obtain a written quote for your legal entity, markets, stores and payment providers.
The minimum three-year platform arithmetic is $2,300 × 36 = $82,800. That is a subscription calculation, not the cost of a finished store. A headless storefront using Plus still needs the Plus subscription. Shopify documents its Hydrogen and Oxygen development path; using it does not remove the work of designing, testing and maintaining your application.
Build a three-year ownership model
Use the same scope and period for every proposal. Separate one-time costs from recurring fees and usage-sensitive costs. Ask who is responsible for each line, what is included, and what triggers an increase.
- Discovery: requirements, architecture validation, data profiling and integration experiments.
- Implementation: design, templates, content models, accessibility, product presentation and checkout integration.
- Migration: catalogue cleanup, customer and order handling, redirects and reconciliation.
- Recurring software: commerce licence, apps, CMS, search, reviews, subscriptions and observability.
- Engineering: dependency updates, incident response, regression testing and small changes.
- Usage: payments, bandwidth, API limits, search requests and additional environments.
- Exit: export capability, documentation, replacement supplier access and contract termination.
Do not put internal staff time at zero. A marketing manager maintaining workarounds or an engineer investigating a brittle integration is part of the operating cost, even when that work is not invoiced by an agency.
Worked example: a three-year comparison
Illustrative procurement model, not market averages or a Nexcey quote. The following USD amounts are invented planning inputs showing how to compare proposals. The first two columns use the published minimum three-year Plus subscription; the custom-backend licence is an assumed quote. Replace every other amount with scoped bids. Taxes, payment processing, internal salaries, growth projects and contingency are excluded.
| Three-year cost item | Plus theme | Plus headless | Custom stack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery, build and migration | $60,000 | $140,000 | $220,000 |
| Commerce licence | $82,800 | $82,800 | $108,000 |
| Apps / CMS / hosting / monitoring | $18,000 | $36,000 | $54,000 |
| Support and maintenance | $72,000 | $144,000 | $216,000 |
| Total of listed inputs | $232,800 | $402,800 | $598,000 |
In this example, headless costs $170,000 more than the theme approach. At an assumed 40% contribution margin, recovering that difference would require $425,000 of additional revenue over three years, before other costs and the time value of money. That is a decision hurdle, not a predicted conversion uplift. You could also justify the difference through measurable operating savings or requirements that the simpler option cannot satisfy.
Prove the expensive requirements before procurement
Select three difficult journeys and ask each supplier to demonstrate them using representative data. For a B2B merchant, that might be a customer-specific catalogue, an approval workflow and a complex order sent to an ERP. For a content-led retailer, it might be editorial preview, regional merchandising and a product launch scheduled across markets.
Evaluate the whole journey: authentication, customer permissions, availability, pricing, discounts, tax, payment, order creation and support access. A beautiful product page does not prove that subscriptions, account features or existing apps will work in a headless storefront. Require an app-by-app compatibility assessment.
Who will operate it after launch?
Ask the content team to create a landing page during the evaluation. Ask support to trace a failed order. Ask engineering to explain rollback and monitoring. If normal changes require a developer ticket, estimate the queue, release frequency and cost explicitly.
A theme-first build is a sensible default when its constraints fit. A headless approach is worth investigating when storefront differentiation creates a credible business benefit and you can fund its ongoing ownership. A different backend deserves consideration when essential commercial rules cannot be delivered acceptably on the proposed platform. Document the blocked requirement instead of using “enterprise” as the reason.
Proposal checklist
- Same catalogue, markets and customer journeys in every bid.
- Named owner for frontend, backend, integrations and incident response.
- Documented editor experience, preview and release process.
- Integration failure handling, retries and reconciliation included.
- Three-year licence and usage assumptions confirmed in writing.
- Performance and accessibility acceptance criteria agreed.
- Migration rehearsal and a realistic cutover plan funded.
- Source access, export rights and handover documentation specified.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify Plus headless?
Shopify Plus can use a theme storefront or a custom headless storefront. The platform plan and storefront architecture are separate decisions.
Does headless automatically improve SEO?
No. Rendering, metadata, internal links, performance and content still need to be implemented and verified. Architecture alone does not guarantee rankings.
What should the budget include beyond the licence?
Include discovery, implementation, migration, apps, content systems, engineering support, usage charges, internal ownership and eventual exit costs.
